NRF 2018, The Big Show opened its doors at the Javits Center in New York City Sunday through Tuesday, Jan. 16 to a theme of Retail Transformation, continuing a discussion of an industry that’s seen evolution speeding through in the last few years.
‘Bold New Directions’
The National Retail Federation‘s conference was described on its website as “an opportunity for the industry to look at bold new directions in competing and succeeding amid a constantly changing market.”
The sessions planned at NRF 2018 addressed topics like:
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Voice command
- Chat and conversational commerce
- Encouraging repeat visits and loyalty
- Creating advocacy, word-of-mouth and general customer fandom
- Providing inspiration and out-of-the-box thinking in searching for the best collaborative partnerships
- Keeping pace with customer evolution.
AI Among the Many Tech Topics
Artificial Intelligence, which has been a focus of talk in retailer circles for several seasons now, was the theme of Big Show tech sessions like one on the agenda by Belk department store and Ascena Retail Group Monday afternoon: A pragmatic approach to artificial intelligence, machine learning and prescriptive analytics. Yet the overall range of topics was wide, from ‘The Reinvention of Charity’ to ‘Driving Loyalty through Mobile and E-commerce.’ And, of course, the theme topic was high on the agenda Sunday, in sessions including with the NRF’s Doug McMillon on ‘The Changing Face of Retail.’ So many sessions – so little time!
